Nina Walton "I utilise the familiar formal language of modernist abstract painting - geometry, grids, and colour interactions - to investigate issues such as ephemerality, perception, femininity and labour. With a focus particularly on the act of making, I make use of commonplace and low-tech materials such as thread, linen, and pins to create works that sit somewhere between painting, sculpture and weaving while being strictly none of these. Like their ambiguous status, visually the work is unstable, shifting constantly, with no fixed viewpoint. The process is time consuming, repetitive, and algorithmic, harkening back to mathematics, traditional women’s craft (knitting, weaving, sewing), and the meditative practices in Buddhist and Zen monasteries (mandalas, raking sand)." Walton is currently living in Sydney, Australia where she is in her final year of a BFA at the National Art School. She also has a PhD in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
